A major fire near Wembley has triggered a large emergency response and caused significant disruption to rail and Underground services across north-west London on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The blaze broke out at a mixed-waste facility on Hannah Close in Neasden, less than a mile from Wembley Stadium. The London Fire Brigade received the first reports shortly after 11:30 a.m., with 20 fire engines and around 125 firefighters sent to tackle the flames.
A huge column of smoke could be seen across the area as firefighters worked to contain the fire. The blaze involved a large industrial unit measuring approximately 100 metres by 150 metres. Fire crews used specialist equipment, including aerial ladders, drones and high-volume pumping equipment, as they worked to bring the incident under control.
Residents in the surrounding area were advised to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed because of the heavy smoke. A nearby Amazon warehouse was also evacuated as a precaution, although the warehouse itself was not involved in the fire.
The fire caused widespread disruption to public transport. Services on the entire Metropolitan line were suspended, while the Jubilee line experienced severe disruption, including no service between Wembley Park and West Hampstead. Rail services into London Marylebone were also affected.
The disruption created significant difficulties for passengers travelling through Wembley and surrounding areas, with commuters advised to check the latest transport information before starting their journeys.
London Fire Brigade said the fire had been brought under control at around 5 p.m., although crews were expected to remain at the scene for several hours while they continued extinguishing remaining hot spots and making the area safe.
There were no immediate reports of serious injuries connected to the blaze. The cause of the fire had not been established and remained under investigation.
The incident has nevertheless created a major impact around Wembley, with thick smoke, emergency vehicles and transport disruptions affecting residents, commuters and businesses.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation while firefighters work to fully extinguish the blaze. Anyone travelling through Wembley, Neasden or nearby parts of north-west London is advised to allow extra time and check current transport updates before travelling.
