The Dayton community is mourning the death of Danielle Smith, 28, who died after suffering serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Coopers Mountain Road in Rockingham County, Virginia, Friday morning.
According to the Virginia State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. on August 28.
Police said Danielle was driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty northbound on Coopers Mountain Road when the vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and collided with a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling southbound.
The reason the Jeep Liberty crossed into the opposite lane has not been determined. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and have not released a final explanation for what caused the crash.
Danielle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries. Her death at just 28 years old has left family members, friends and others who knew her mourning a sudden and heartbreaking loss.
An infant was also traveling in Danielle’s vehicle at the time of the crash. The child did not appear to have suffered injuries, according to the information available, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution for further evaluation.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee also sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.
For Danielle’s loved ones, her death represents much more than the circumstances of a devastating roadway collision. At 28, she had a lifetime of relationships, experiences and memories ahead of her. Her sudden passing has created a painful absence for the people who knew and loved her.
